People gamble to win money. That’s the reason millions of people consistently purchase lottery tickets. The odds against a large pay-off are astronomical, but people continue buying tickets. Occasionally, they’ll win a few dollars. That’s precisely the reason people keep coming back. Winning even a tiny amount positively reinforces the idea that winning is possible. People who spend $50.00 on tickets and win $10.00 don’t consider that they’ve lost $40.00. Instead, in their minds, if they can win $10.00, then a $100 win is just around the corner.  Gambling online is not only more convenient and just as exciting but players have the same odds of winning playing casino games in an online casino or in online slots game (play poker online) as they do in a land based casino.

People enjoy gambling because it gives them a chance to win over someone else. That explains the popularity of weekly poker games. Winning a pot is fun, but the real thrill is in beating the other players. These kinds of card players usually suffer more from an ego problem than a gambling affliction.

Another reason for gambling is the sheer thrill of it. The 9-5 life can be boring and predictable. Time spent at a casino is the exact opposite. Every card turned offers an exciting possibility. Each quarter inserted into the slot machine holds the promise of victory. That kind of recreational gambling can be fun if it’s mixed with a healthy dose of reality. If the urge for a payoff turns into recklessness, a line has been crossed.

Maybe the most dangerous game in gambling is the one that is “almost” won. It can be that one card for an inside straight or that one missing number on a online bingo, since online bingo promotions are fresh, interesting and profitable or lottery card. Coming close to a win reinforces the idea that a payoff is just one more game or card away. Casinos and lottery ticket issuers are perfectly aware of the power of the close game.
